Project Emerald: Jeco Energies is helping to build PSA's renewed Europa Terminal

The world’s largest container ships arrive at the Europa Terminal in Antwerp, trucks drive in and out and containers are constantly moved. That activity cannot simply be shut down. Nevertheless, PSA is radically renovating the terminal so that it can receive larger ships, handle more containers and deploy more electrical equipment.

This requires a new electrical infrastructure. In the civil and electrical works, Stadsbader and Jeco Energies combine their expertise. Our teams are working on a main substation, two substations for automatic stacking cranes and four substations for refrigerated containers, among others. Switching equipment, cabling, fiber optic connections and control systems are also part of the whole. Our infrastructure will power, among other things, the cranes and 1,040 connection points for refrigerated containers.

Jeco Energies is also working on a shore power installation for the Europa Terminal. Because even when a ship is moored at the quay, it needs power for lighting, heating and cooling, for example. This electricity is usually generated on board with fossil fuel engines. With shore power, moored ships can use electricity from the quay instead.

The planned installation has a capacity of 7.5 MW and can supply up to 100 container ships with shore power annually. PSA expects to reduce CO₂ emissions by up to 10,309 tonnes per year.

From electricity for cranes and refrigerated containers to electricity for ships at the quay: Jeco Energies is helping to prepare the Europa Terminal for its future in several places.
