Onshore Power Supply

Ports are evolving to meet the demands of a cleaner, quieter, and more sustainable future. One of the most effective developments in this transition is shore power.

How does it work?

Onshore Power Supply (OPS) makes it possible for ships at the quay to switch off their generators and switch to shore power.

We combine specialized Engineering Procurement, and Commissioning expertise with more than 30 years of experience in realizing turnkey electrical infrastructure for the industrial maritime sector. In this way, we support the broader electrification strategy of terminals and ports.

Our expertise

Behind every seamless shore power connection is a complex network of high-voltage cables, transformers and frequency converters — all designed to provide stable electricity to vessels of all types. Find out how we make this happen.

Shore Power as a Service

Jeco Energies and Plug help you focus on your core business

Behind every seamless shore power connection is a complex network of high-voltage cables, transformers and frequency converters — all designed to provide stable electricity to vessels of all types. Find out how we make this happen.

Who is Plug?

Plug was born out of a clear need: major ports around the world need reliable shore power infrastructure to support ships in transitioning away from diesel generators. After rebranding from Bergen Landstrøm to Plug in 2019, the company expanded further beyond Bergen, with new projects in Ålesund, Nordfjordeid and other strategic locations. Today, the portfolio includes several large ports and continues to grow, with both operational installations and new projects under development.

What do we offer you as a terminal operator and/or port authority?

We offer two methods:

We set up a Joint Venture (JV) or Special Purpose Vehicle between Jeco Energies, Plug and your organisation. The parties involved share, by mutual agreement, both the investment costs and the return on investment.

By taking responsibility for the financing, construction, ownership, and operation of the OPS plant, the JV lowers complexity and long-term risks, while ensuring a reliable and scalable solution.

Jeco Energies and Plug assume full responsibility for the investment, installation and operation of the OPS system, effectively offering it as a service.

This requires clear long-term agreements on use, risk allocation and commercial conditions, including an annual availability fee to ensure a feasible return. Even if the port or terminal itself does not invest, active involvement and engagement remain essential for this model to function successfully.

Jeco Energies and Plug support terminals in the investment, implementation and operation of shore power solutions.

How do I manage this strategic investment?

As a financially strong long-term partner, Plug invests in OPS projects across Europe. Thanks to existing OPS installations owned by Plug, they bring in-depth knowledge and practical experience.

Jeco Energies has many years of experience in engineering, procurement and construction as a global EPC integrator, with a strong focus on electrical infrastructure for ports and maritime applications.

Can I remain operational 24/7 during the installation of OPS?

The construction of OPS systems can be challenging, as it includes grid connections, energy infrastructure, power cable management, and unique terminal conditions. Thanks to the combined expertise of Jeco Energies and Plug, your terminal operations can simultaneously remain operational 24/7 throughout the entire installation and implementation of the system.

How do you determine the correct dimensioning of my OPS installation?

The OPS installation is fully tailored to your needs in terms of capacity and scale. Based on ship-specific data, we dimension the installation in the most efficient and suitable way.

Thanks to our experience in both building and operating OPS installations in other ports, we can select the right equipment and work with the most suitable suppliers for your project.

How can I optimise my energy costs?

Plug's management platform uses ML-driven forecasting to smartly optimize energy moments and reduce energy costs. With deep experience with Distribution System Operators (DSOs) and complex regulations, we can efficiently manage grid challenges and ensure a reliable, cost-efficient power supply.

How can I ensure that my operations continue to run efficiently?

Efficiency is key. Plug and Jeco Energies take the technical and operational complexity off their hands, so that terminals can fully focus on their core activities. We provide the necessary expertise and training to ensure safe, smooth and efficient power connections.

Jeco Energies combines the expertise of several entities within the group, so that the right knowledge and specialization is always brought on board.

Do I need additional administration to manage OPS?

Our digital platform automates processes such as invoicing, reporting, and maintenance, and gives stakeholders role-based access to real-time ESG data and insights.

By collecting ship-specific data on electricity consumption during each port call, predictions for future connections become increasingly accurate and efficient.
