Volkswagen in South Africa: 18 MW of emergency power to keep car production going

The Volkswagen Polo is a familiar car on the road for many people. Some of those cars are built in Kariega, South Africa. There, each car goes through a series of production steps before leaving the factory. Machines and employees are attuned to each other. If the power goes out, the whole process can come to a standstill.

A production stop takes time and can disrupt the planning of the factory. Volkswagen therefore needed a power supply that could quickly kick in in the event of a grid failure. Jeco Energies designed and installed an 18 MW standby solution. To this end, we built three transformer containers and two switch containers internally. Together, they connect temporary power generation to the plant’s electrical infrastructure.

We monitor the operation of the system via remote monitoring. Preventative maintenance helps to keep it available when it’s needed.

In the event of a grid failure, the installation is designed to restore the power supply within 8 to 10 seconds. In this way, Jeco Energies is helping Volkswagen to limit the impact of power cuts on car production.
